Silhouette

Petite Busty Inverted triangle- Your shoulders are wider than your hips. Secondary body type: Hourglass

Celebrities with an inverted triangle body type (although not as busty): Teri Hatcher, Demi Moore, Cameron Diaz

Celebrities with an hourglass body type: Jennifer Lawrence, Scarlett Johansson, Catherine Zeta Jones

Style approach

Play up the bottom to balance the body. We’re going for visual balance/symmetry.  As your weight fluctuates, you will likely alternate between and inverted triangle and something closer to an hourglass figure. When you are more hourglass-shaped, the need to accentuate your bottom half decreases.

Colors

Pieces

Tops

  • Sleeveless, asymmetrical necklines
  • V-necks, scoop necks, rounded collars
  • Raglan sleeves (where the seem runs to the collar instead of to the shoulder)
  • Dark colors, vertical stripes
  • Flowy tops with asymmetrical hemlines
  • A peplum band
  • 3/4 sleeves
  • Tops with mid sized straps
  • Drop tops (drawstring at the hips), trapeze, empire waist
  • Higher cut arm holes
  • Knits that keep a close line to the body
  • Wrap designs as long as the neck is not too wide
  • For patterns- stick with vertical stripes or prints that are proportional to your frame and don't overwhelm.

To maximize the bust line:

bright and light tops, horizontal stripes and prints, asymmetrical tops, ruffled and pleated blouses, details at the bust, boat, crew, high and low cut necklines.

To minimize the bust line:

  • Vertical or diagonal stripes or details
  • Solid tops in neutral or deep colors
  • Wrap styles and tailored options with darts
  • Deep shawl collars

Avoid: Wide V-Necks, square necklines, spaghetti straps, light colors, horizontal stripes, halter, strapless, off the shoulder, big collars. Cap, puffy, ruffled, pleated or any sleeve with lot of detail near the shoulder. Tops with built-in volume, big shawl collars. Anything this is too large and not tailored to your frame. Extra large prints that overwhelm.

Pants

  • Any style that will accentuate your bottom and leg line, such as:
    • Patterns and prints
    • Straight, boot cut, boyfriend or baggy trousers or jeans
    • Combat, palazzo, flares, wide legs
    • Embellishment on the back pockets
    • Wide belt loops, side pocket details
    • Slim-fitted waist with gradual flare to create width and balance broad shoulders
    • Cuffed or ankle length pants that create curves
    • Shorts that show off your legs
    • Shorts with embellishment, bright colors and/or texture
    • Ankle length pants and/or rolling your pants at the ankle
    • Prints that are proportional to your frame
    • Vertical stripes elongate you
    • Wearing the same color pant as your top makes you appear taller, as well.

To minimize your thighs:

  • Tailored pants with a wide leg/ sailor pants
  • Darker colors, less contrast
  • Wool or denim hold their shape and aren't too clingy
  • Structured bottoms
  • High waisted leggings or jeggings with spandex
  • Wide leg pants that balance out your top half (wear with heels to keep it streamlined)
  • Slightly flared yoga or palazzo pants (if you must)
  • Prints that are proportional to your frame

Avoid: Skinny jeans with no wow factor don't make you look your best, but you can offset them with bold shoes. Also, baggy pants or anything that is not tailored to fit you. Ensure the length is correct and have jeans hemmed with the original bottom.

Skirts

  • A peplum band
  • Detail at the hips, side pockets
  • Horizontal striped skirts
  • Soft a-line with inverted pleats
  • Shorter length to show off your legs
  • Prints or bright colors
  • Straight skirts that just about cover the knee
  • Full skirts
  • Trumpet and flared styles
  • Tiered designs
  • Prints that are proportional to your frame

To minimize your thighs:

  • A-line skirts
  • Maxi skirts

To minimize the bust line:

  • Solid top portion of the dress in neutral or deep colors
  • Vertical or diagonal stripes or details
  • Wrap styles and tailored options with darts
  • Deep shawl collars
  • Vertical patterns or monochromatic to elongate
  • Prints are great, just keep them in proportion to your frame.
  • Dresses in petite sizes and/or tailored to fit your frame

To minimize your thighs:

  • Opt for A-line skirts that show off your small waist and minimize your thighs
  • Avoid drop waist dresses which conceal your natural waistline and draw attention to the widest part of your body.
  • Avoid tunics that cling to your thighs. Otherwise, tunics can work.
  • Boxy shifts
  • Oversized options.
  • Opt for attention-getting designs at the hemline rather than on your thighs

Avoid: Off-the-shoulder necklines, baggy or oversized options.

Jackets

  • Kitten or wedge heels
  • Colorful or print shoes
  • Calf high boots that are angled at the top are elongating
  • Shoes with interesting texture or unusual design elements
  • Heels are great on you as they elongate your frame.

To elongate your frame: Go a shade darker on your shoes than your pants, wear colors of similar intensity, match your boots to your skirt hem, match shoes to tights, wear knee high boots.

Avoid: pointed or dainty shoes, blending your shoes with your pants, skirt or dress.

Accessories

  • Low slung belts that do not contrast dramatically with your outfit
  • Opt for earrings instead of necklaces
  • Statement shoes, bold pedicure
  • Bold handbag that sits at the hips
  • Bracelets, watches, rings drawing attention to your hands
